About Dorothy Ferebee
Dorothy Ferebee (born October 10, 1898) was a pioneering physician known for her dedication to providing medical services for African Americans in the South. Born in Virginia, she attended Simmons College in Massachusetts before enrolling at Tufts University Medical School.
Throughout her career, Ferebee founded the Southeast Neighborhood House in Washington D.C. and served as director of the Mississippi Health Project and the Howard University Medical School health services wing. She also held leadership positions such as President of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority during the late 1930s and early 1940s, and later became vice president of the Girl Scouts three decades later.
Ferebee’s impact extended beyond her professional achievements as she played a crucial role in advocating for improved healthcare access for underserved communities. Raised in Norfolk, Virginia and Boston, Massachusetts, she eventually settled in Washington D.C., where she married dentist Claude Thurston Ferebee and had fraternal twins named Claude Jr. and Dorothy.
