About Dorothy Buffum Chandler
Dorothy Buffum Chandler (May 19, 1901) was an influential figure known for her philanthropy and patronage of the performing arts in Los Angeles. She gained prominence as the wife of Norman Chandler, a newspaper mogul, and dedicated herself to activism in California.
Chandler’s influence extended to her efforts in saving the Hollywood Bowl through fundraising concerts when it faced financial struggles in 1950. Furthermore, she played a key role in founding the Los Angeles Music Center during the 1960s.
Prior to marrying into the Chandler family, she met Norman at a dance event while attending Stanford University. Interestingly, Dorothy originated from Illinois and came from a background tied to Buffum’s department stores—a chain owned by her father and uncle.
