About Dorothy Allison
Dorothy Allison is an American feminist writer born on April 11, 1949. She hails from South Carolina and has made significant contributions as an activist. Her works typically explore themes of sexual abuse, lesbianism, and class struggle. Notable publications include “Trash: Short Stories” (1988) and “skin: Talking About Sex, Class, & Literature” (1994). Additionally, her autobiographical novel “Bastard Out of Carolina” (1992) was a finalist for the National Book Award.
Before gaining recognition as a writer, Dorothy Allison graduated from Florida Presbyterian College and worked as a maid and substitute teacher. Her second novel, “Cavedweller,” achieved New York Times bestseller status and also received the Lambda Literary Award.
Family-wise, she was born in South Carolina but ultimately settled in California with her partner Alix Layman.
