About Dorothea Dix
Dorothea Dix, born on April 4, 1802 in Hampden, Maine, was an influential American mental health activist and civil rights leader. She is credited with the creation of the first American mental asylums and served as the Superintendent of Army Nurses during the American Civil War.
Before gaining fame for her advocacy work, she ran away from home at age twelve to escape her abusive, alcoholic father. Her legacy was honored by the United States Postal Service with the issuing of a Dorothea Dix one cent stamp in 1983.
She was the eldest of three children born to her parents.
