Dolley Madison, born on May 20, 1768 in Greensboro, North Carolina, was the charismatic and fashionable wife of James Madison, the President of the United States from 1809 to 1817. Expelled from the Society of Friends for marrying a non-Quaker, she became known for her wit and charm as the First Lady. She also acted as First Lady during Thomas Jefferson’s presidency after his wife passed away. Dolley married James Madison in September 1794 and had two children named John Payne Todd and William Temple Todd.
