Deidre Downs was born on July 7, 1980, in Birmingham, Alabama. She is best known for her achievement of winning the Miss America pageant title in 2005 after previously serving as Miss Alabama 2004. Prior to her pageant career, she briefly studied at the University of Virginia before transferring to Samford University in Alabama. After completing her reign as Miss America, she enrolled in medical school at the University of Alabama (Birmingham). In 2008, she married teacher Andrew Gunn.
