Cristela Alonzo, born on January 6, 1979 in Hidalgo, Texas, is a stand-up comedian. She made history with the launch of her sitcom Cristela as the first Latina to produce, write and star in her own network television show. Alonzo has showcased her stand-up routines on shows such as Comedy Central’s The Half Hour and was recognized as one of the 10 L.A. Comedy Acts to Watch by L.A. Weekly in 2014.
Prior to fame, she endured homelessness for the first eight years of her life but excelled academically, earning several Academic Decathlon medals and serving as President of the Drama Club at Pharr-San Juan-Alamo High School.
Trivia: The midwife who delivered Alonzo happened to be actor David Barrera’s aunt; coincidentally Barrera was married to Alonzo’s Cristela co-star Maria Canals Barrera.
In terms of family life, she has been in a long-term relationship with fellow stand-up comedian Stephen Halasz. Her mother Natalia raised Alonzo and her three siblings as a single parent.
