Connie Culp (born March 26, 1963) is known as the very first American face transplant recipient. Originally from Ohio, she became a notable figure after undergoing groundbreaking surgery following a traumatic incident.
In 2004, Culp’s husband Tom fired a gun at her face, leading to severe facial injuries and the need for extensive reconstructive surgery. Prior to her face transplant, she had undergone thirty other facial surgeries in an attempt to repair the damage.
The historic procedure was performed by Dr. Maria Siemionow and lasted twenty-two hours, during which Culp’s damaged face was replaced with that of a deceased donor. This operation marked a significant milestone in medical history.
Culp’s husband was convicted of attempting to murder her in 2005. She also had a fraternal twin sister named Bonnie Oberlin.
