About Conchita Martinez
Conchita Martinez, born on April 16, 1972 in Monzon, Spain, is a former professional tennis player and the 1994 women’s singles Wimbledon champion. She has gone on to become the captain of the Spain Fed Cup and Spain Davis Cup teams.
Martinez began playing tennis at the age of nine and turned pro in 1988. In her third professional tournament, she made it to the fourth round at the French Open at sixteen years old.
As an accomplished Olympian, Martinez earned the doubles bronze in the 1996 Atlanta games and silver at both Barcelona (1992) and Athens (2004) games.
Born in Monson, she moved with her father to Madrid at age four before returning to her birthplace at eight. She often practiced tennis with her brothers while growing up.
