Colleen Dewhurst, born on June 3, 1924 in Montreal, Canada, was an acclaimed Canadian-born theater and television actress. She is best known for her Tony Award-winning performance as Josie Hogan in the Broadway revival of A Moon for the Misbegotten. Dewhurst also made notable appearances on the television series Murphy Brown and played Marilla Cuthbert in the popular Anne of Green Gables television miniseries.
Prior to achieving fame, she worked odd jobs such as receptionist and elevator operator when not performing in summer theatrical productions. Dewhurst became celebrated for her powerful interpretations of playwright Eugene O’Neill’s dramatic works.
In terms of family life, she was married to actor/director George C. Scott from 1960-1965 and again from 1967-1972. Her son Campbell Scott also pursued a career in acting.
