About Clara Ward
Clara Ward was a gospel singer and vocal arranger who was born on April 21, 1924, in Pennsylvania. She gained recognition as a member of the popular vocal ensemble The Famous Ward Singers during the 1940s and ’50s. Additionally, she appeared alongside Hank Williams Jr. in the 1968 film A Time to Sing.
Prior to her fame, Ward recorded her debut solo track in 1940 and joined her fellow Ward Singers on a national tour. She also contributed backing vocals to Dee Dee Sharp’s chart-topping single “Mashed Potato Time” and released a solo album titled Soul and Inspiration.
Ward’s mother, Gertrude Ward, founded The Ward Singers in the early 1930s and performed with Clara and Clara’s older sister, Willa. In addition, Clara had a long-lasting romantic relationship with Reverend C.L. Franklin, the father of singer Aretha Franklin.
