About Christine King Farris
Christine King Farris, born on September 11, 1927 in Georgia, is a prominent figure known for her roles as a college professor, author, and the older sister of civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. Farris dedicated much of her career to education and social change efforts.
She began her academic journey in Atlanta and went on to graduate from Spelman College and Columbia University. Throughout her career she taught at Spelman College and held a leadership role at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change. Farris also authored multiple educational books that have contributed significantly to literature in the field.
Beyond academia, Farris was actively involved with organizations such as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the International Reading Association and Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
In 1960, Christine married Isaac Newton Farris Sr., with whom she had two children but faced numerous family tragedies; Her brother Martin Luther King Jr’s assassination was followed by their mother’s murder along with another brother’s drowning accident.
