About Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz
Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz was a queen of Great Britain and Ireland, who was born in England on May 19, 1744. She married George III in 1761 and remained queen until her death in 1818.
Despite being referred to as the first black Queen of England, there is debate among historians about the accuracy of accounts claiming she had African ancestry. She was actually German but may have had some African ancestors by Way of Portugal.
Before becoming queen, Charlotte was born in Mirow, Germany and received an average education. She did not speak any English on her wedding day but quickly learned the language after arriving in England. She shared interests with Marie Antoinette and became friends with her.
Born to Duke Charles Louis Frederick of Mecklenburg, Prince of Mirow, Charlotte had 15 children with George III, out of which 13 survived to adulthood.
In addition to their family life together, both she and her husband enjoyed the music composed by George Frideric Handel.
