About Charlotte Mew

Charlotte Mew was an English poet born on November 15, 1869, in England. She is known for her work in Modernism and Victorian-era poetry, with notable poems such as “On the Asylum Road,” “In Nunhead Cemetery,” and “The Farmer’s Bride.”

Prior to gaining fame as a poet, Mew studied at Lucy Harrison’s School for Girls and also attended lectures at University College, London.

Mew made a unique mark by wearing men’s clothing throughout her adult life and vowing never to marry due to concerns about passing mental illness that plagued her family. Some biographers speculate that she may have been a celibate lesbian.

Her father was the architect Fredrick Mew. She had several siblings; however, many of them died in childhood or were committed to mental institutions.
