About Catherine McAuley
Catherine McAuley was an Irish Catholic nun born on September 29, 1778. In 1831, she established the order of the Sisters of Mercy and dedicated her last ten years to education-centered charity efforts.
As Sister Mary Catherine, McAuley opened fourteen branches of the Sisters of Mercy in England and Ireland. She expanded the order to include 150 members.
The Sisters of Mercy began after McAuley used a large sum of money she had inherited to build a center in Dublin for the care and education of impoverished women and children.
After her death, her organization expanded globally with branches in New Zealand, Argentina, Australia, and the United States totaling approximately 10,000 members by the early 21st Century.
Catherine grew up in Dublin as one of three siblings raised by Elinor and James McAuley.
