Catherine Laboure was a religious leader born on May 2, 1806, in France. She was a member of the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul and is known for receiving a vision from the Virgin Mary to create the Miraculous Medal, which is worn by Christians worldwide.
Before gaining fame, Laboure experienced a significant event in July 1830 when she heard a voice calling her to the nearby chapel. There, she saw an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary who showed her the design for the medal that was to be created. According to Laboure’s account of the vision, wearers of the medal were promised “great graces.”
In her personal life, it is said that at her mother’s funeral, she picked up a statue of the Virgin Mary and declared that it would now be her mother.
