About Catherine De Medici
Catherine De Medici was a member of the Italian aristocracy and became Queen Consort of France after her husband Henry II was crowned in 1547. Known for her patronage of the arts, she commissioned the construction of the Tuileries Palace in Paris.
Before her royal marriage, Catherine spent several years living in a convent as a result of political turmoil within her family. She was also known for her influence on her ruling sons and controversial policies towards the Huguenots, which led to blame being placed on her for the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre in 1572.
Catherine had ten children with Henry II, three of whom went on to become Kings of France and two daughters who served as Queens of Spain and France.
