About Caroline Kirkland
Caroline Kirkland (January 11, 1801) was an American novelist known for her frontier-themed books such as Forest Life, Western Clearings, and A New Home; Who’ll Follow. She also established schools in New York and was a member of a literary circle that included poets William Cullen Bryant and Edgar Allan Poe.
Kirkland was born in New York City and grew up with her ten younger siblings. After living in Michigan and publishing her first works, she returned to New York where she married William Kirkland, editor of the New York Evening Mirror. The couple had five children, including the novelist Joseph Kirkland.
In addition to her writing career, Kirkland edited the Union Magazine in the late 1840s.
