About Caroline Harrison

Caroline Harrison (October 1, 1832) was the First Lady of the United States as the wife of 23rd President Benjamin Harrison. She hailed from Ohio and played a pivotal role in overseeing the renovation of The White House during the late 19th century. Additionally, she held the distinction of being a founding member and serving as the first president of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).

Prior to her prominence in public life, Caroline pursued an education at the Oxford Female Institute where she graduated with a degree in music. Following her studies, she worked as a teacher in Carrollton, Kentucky.

Regrettably, Caroline succumbed to tuberculosis at age sixty. After her passing, Benjamin Harrison later married her niece Mary Scott Dimmick.

Caroline grew up in Oxford as part of John Witherspoon Scott’s family – he was not only a Presbyterian minister but also a mathematics professor. She eventually formed a family with Benjamin Harrison when they welcomed their son Russell into this world in 1854 followed by daughter Mamie’s birth four years later.
