Caroline Blackwood was an English novelist, best known for her marriages to painter Lucian Freud and poet Robert Lowell. Born on July 16, 1931, in England, she gained recognition as a successful author with her debut novel The Stepdaughter (1976), which won the David Highman Prize.

Prior to her literary career, Blackwood briefly worked as a secretary and later transitioned into journalism in the 1960s, contributing to publications such as The London Magazine and Encounter. She also ventured into acting and appeared in several Hollywood films during the 1950s and ’60s.

Blackwood’s personal life became widely publicized due to her relationships with prominent figures like Lucian Freud and Robert Lowell. She was notably featured in several of Freud’s famous paintings including Girl in Bed (1952). She was married thrice; her third husband being writer Robert Lowell, preceded by Lucian Freud and Israel Citkowitz.
