About Brinda Karat
Brinda Karat is an Indian politician who was born on October 17, 1947. She is affiliated with the Communist Party of India and has had a successful career in politics.
In 2005, she became a member of both her party’s Politburo and the Rajya Sabha (India’s upper parliamentary house). Earlier in her career, she served as both the secretary and the vice-president of the All India Democratic Women’s Association.
Before entering politics, Karat earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Delhi’s Miranda House College and her master’s degree in history from the University of Calcutta. She also worked for Air India at their London office.
Karat published a historical and sociological work titled “Survival and Emancipation: Notes from Indian Women’s Struggles” in 2005. She comes from a family that includes three siblings, parents Sooraj Lal Das and Oshrukona Mitra, husband Prakash Karat (also a communist politician), and sister-in-law Radhika Roy who is married to New Delhi Television Limited CEO Prannoy Roy.
