About Big Mama Thornton
Big Mama Thornton, born on December 11, 1926 in Alabama, was an American blues singer known for her 1952 hit “Hound Dog,” which later became a famous rendition by Elvis Presley. Throughout her career, she released seven studio albums and received six Blues Music Award nominations. She was also inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Prior to her fame, Thornton left school after the passing of her mother and began working at a local tavern. In 1940, she joined the Sammy Greens Hot Harlem Revue before gaining widespread recognition for her music.
Notably, Big Mama Thornton challenged traditional gender expectations during live performances by wearing clothing typically worn by men. Her final full-length release was the Mama’s Pride compilation in 1978.
Born as Willie Mae Thornton to a minister and church singer, she was one of seven children in her family.
