She was planning to study criminal justice at Northeastern University, but ended up beginning a successful modeling career instead. She’s been married and divorced twice, and has a daughter named Anansa who followed in her footsteps and worked as a plus-size model. In 2006, Oprah Winfrey honored her at her Legends Ball.
