About Betye Saar
Betye Saar (born July 30, 1926) is an American assemblage artist and painter from Los Angeles, California. She is best known for her controversial 1972 work “The Liberation of Aunt Jemima” and has been a prominent figure in the black arts movement of the 1970s.
Before fame, Saar studied design at the University of California-Los Angeles in the late 1940s and later pursued graduate studies at Pasadena City College and California State University, Long Beach from 1958 to 1962.
In recognition of her contributions to art, she received The Visual Artists Award from The Flintridge Foundation in 1997. Additionally tragic events have influenced her life with her father’s sudden death in 1931. Her two children also became artists.
