About Betty Shabazz
Betty Shabazz was a prominent civil rights leader who was born in Michigan on May 28, 1934. She was not only known for her role as the wife of Malcolm X but also for her work as a teacher and civil rights activist.
Before gaining prominence in the civil rights movement, Betty attended Tuskegee University, which is historically black college. After her husband’s assassination, she took on an active role within the NAACP and was eventually named to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Betty had six children with Malcolm X and lived through tragedy when her grandson set fire to her apartment, resulting in severe burns that ultimately led to her death.
