About Betty Campbell
Betty Campbell (born November 6, 1934) is a Welsh community activist known for being the first black woman to hold the position of headteacher in Wales. She was born in Butetown, Cardiff to Honora, a Welsh Barbadian mother, and Simon Vickers Johnson, who was killed in World War II.
She received her education at Lady Margaret High School for Girls in Cardiff and went on to work as a primary school teacher at Mount Stuart Primary School for 28 years. In addition to her teaching career, Campbell has been an active member of various organizations including serving on the Commission for Racial Equality in Wales and as a board member of BBC Wales.
In recognition of her significant contributions to education and activism, she has had a statue erected in her honor in Cardiff. Campbell’s accomplishments have also earned her accolades such as being made an honorary fellow of Cardiff Metropolitan University and receiving a lifetime achievement award from Unison Cymru’s Black Members’ group.
Campbell married Rupert Campbell with whom she had four children.
