About Bessie Smith
Bessie Smith (born April 15, 1894) was an influential blues singer known as the Empress of the Blues. Hailing from Chattanooga, Tennessee, she rose to fame in the 1920s and 1930s with award-winning songs such as “Empty Bed Blues” and “St. Louis Blues.”
Prior to her rise to stardom, Smith performed as a street musician alongside her brother in Chattanooga. It was legendary blues artist Ma Rainey who took her under her wing and helped cultivate her stage presence.
While she had a brief stint on Broadway, it was during this time that she had the opportunity to perform with another iconic figure of jazz and blues music, Louis Armstrong.
Born to parents Laura and William Smith – a laborer by trade but also an occasional Baptist preacher – Bessie Smith’s impact on the world of blues music endures as part of her remarkable legacy.
