About Bessie Jackson
Bessie Jackson, born on April 1, 1897 in Mississippi, was an influential blues singer and one of the first to ever be recorded. She is known for her songs “Seaboard Blues,” “Troubled Mind,” and “Superstitious Blues.”
Coming out of the Alabama blues scene, she made her first recording in the 1920s and then teamed up with pianist Walter Roland for nearly one hundred recordings.
Notably, she raised eyebrows with songs like “B.D. Woman’s Blues,” where the acronym stood for “bull dykes.” In this song, she explained in her opening lines: “Comin’ a time/women ain’t gonna need no men.”
Bessie was born in Amory, Mississippi and after divorcing her first husband, she married another man who was twenty-two years younger than her.
