About Bennie Lee Sinclair
Bennie Lee Sinclair (born April 15, 1939) is an American poet, short story author, novelist, and former South Carolina Poet Laureate. She was born in South Carolina and has written literary works such as Little Chicago Suite (poems), Appalachian Trilogy (short fiction), and The Lynching (novel).
Sinclair’s passion for writing began at a young age when her first poems were published while she was in first grade. She went on to graduate from Greenville High School and Furman University before embarking on a career in writing and publishing.
Notably, Sinclair encountered a moment of resilience during the 1999 inauguration of the South Carolina governor when her paper blew away as she was reading a poem. Without missing a beat, she recited her poem from memory.
In 1958, Sinclair married Don Lewis, a sculptor. The couple made their home on a wildlife sanctuary in Greenville County, South Carolina.
