About Bella Akhmadulina
Bella Akhmadulina (born April 10, 1937) is a Russian poet known for her apolitical and relationship-themed poems. She was awarded the Pushkin Prize and is recognized as a prominent figure in the Russian New Wave poetry movement.
Akhmadulina’s notable poetry collections include Music Lessons, Fever, and The String. She began her career as a journalist at a Moscow newspaper before publishing her first poems in 1955.
As the only child of a Russian-Italian mother and Tatar father, Akhmadulina had an eclectic cultural background that enriched her poetic work. She gained international recognition for her literary talents and frequently spoke to sold-out audiences during her travels abroad.
In addition to being an acclaimed poet, Akhmadulina was married four times between 1954 and 1974 -to Yevgeny Yevtushenko o, Yuri Nagibin, Eldar Kuliev, and Boris Messerer — and had one daughter.
