About Beatriz Merino
Beatriz Merino is a Peruvian politician who made history as the first female Prime Minister of Peru. Born on November 15, 1947, in Lima, Peru, she studied law at the National University of San Marcos before earning her master’s degree in law from Harvard University, making her the first Peruvian woman to graduate from Harvard Law School.
Merino’s political career began when she served as a Peruvian senator from 1990 to 1992. She later held the position of Prime Minister from June to December of 2003. From September 2005 until March 2011, she also served as the national ombudsman for Peru.
In recognition of her achievements, Merino was selected to receive the Harvard University Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015, becoming the first woman in Peru to obtain this prestigious honor from Harvard Alumni and Faculty.
