About Barbara McLean
Barbara McLean, born on November 16, 1903 in New Jersey, was a prominent film editor and producer during the mid-20th century. She is best known for her work as the chief film editor at 20th Century Fox from the 1930s through the 1950s. Throughout her career, she received seven Academy Award nominations and won an Oscar for Film Editing in 1944 for her work on the Henry King-directed feature “Wilson.”
Prior to gaining recognition in Hollywood, McLean developed her skills by learning how to process film and studying music during her childhood years. Her editing career began at Los Angeles’ First National Studio before she became an assistant at Twentieth Century Pictures where she earned her first Academy Award nomination for the 1935 movie version of “Les Miserables.”
McLean frequently collaborated with studio executive Darryl F. Zanuck throughout much of her career. She was also associated with family ties to the industry – being raised by Charles Pollut, who owned a film lab.
Barbara McLean’s personal life saw two marriages: one to cameraman J. Gordon McLean which ended in divorce in the 1940s; and another to cinematic director Robert D. Webb that lasted from 1951 until his death in 1990.
