About Ava DuVernay
Ava DuVernay, born on August 24, 1972 in Long Beach, California, is an award-winning filmmaker known for her critical acclaim as the director of films such as “Middle of Nowhere” (2012) and “Selma” (2014). Her work on “Selma” made her the first African-American female to receive a Golden Globe nomination for Best Director.
DuVernay grew up in Compton, California and later double-majored in English and African American Studies at UCLA. She also founded The African-American Film Festival Releasing Movement to aid in distributing independent African-American films.
She was raised by her mother and stepfather alongside her two sisters.
