About Auguste van Pels
Auguste van Pels, born on September 29, 1900 in Germany, is remembered for her association with diarist Anne Frank. She died in the Holocaust after being discovered in the Amsterdam office building where she was hiding with the Frank family. In The Diary of Anne Frank, she is referred to as “Petronella van Daan.”
Before fame, Auguste (formerly Rottgen) grew up in Buer, Germany. She went into hiding with her own family and the Franks in July of 1942.
In Frank’s diary, she is portrayed as an excellent cook with a fiery personality. Her marriage to Hermann van Pels resulted in a son named Peter; she and her family members are all mentioned pseudonymously in Anne Frank’s diary.
