About Augusta Ladygregory
Augusta Ladygregory, born on March 15, 1852 in Ireland, was a prominent figure in the Irish Literary Revival of the late 19th and early 20th century. She was a playwright, director, and theater producer best known for her role in founding both the Abbey Theatre and the Irish Literary Theatre.
Before gaining fame for her theatrical contributions, Lady Gregory published several literary works including A Woman’s Sonnets (poems) and Arabi and His Household (a political pamphlet). Her deep interest in Irish mythology and folklore led to her publication of numerous collections of traditional Irish stories.
Lady Gregory spent her formative years in County Galway, Ireland before marrying Sir William Henry Gregory. Tragically, her son Robert Gregory lost his life while serving in World War I.
