About Augusta Jane Evans
Augusta Jane Evans (1835-05-08) was a nineteenth-century southern writer born in Columbus, Georgia. She is best known for her career as a novelist, during which she published nine novels including the popular Inez (1850), Beulah (1859), Macaria (1863), St. Elmo (1866), and Vashti (1869). Her writing style is characterized by sentimentality and Victorian themes.
Prior to becoming an author, Augusta Jane Evans supported the Confederacy during the Civil War and even penned Macaria in 1863, now considered a significant piece of Confederate propaganda. Notably, she wrote her first novel at just fifteen years old.
In terms of personal life, Evans broke off an engagement with James Reed Spalding due to his Union sympathies but went on to marry Lorenzo Madison Wilson after the war ended.
