About Assia Djebar
Assia Djebar was an Algerian-born feminist writer, known for works such as Les Enfants du Nouveau Monde and Les Impatients. She was awarded the Neustadt International Prize for Literature in 1996. Before gaining fame, she attended a boarding school in Blida and published her debut novel, La Soif (The Thirst), in 1957. Djebar holds the distinction of being the first Algerian woman accepted at the prestigious Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris. Born into a Muslim, Berber-speaking family in Ain Defla Province, Algeria; her father worked as a French teacher.
