About Assata Shakur
Assata Shakur, born JoAnne Deborah Byron on July 16, 1947 in New York, is a figure known for her involvement in the infamous 1973 New Jersey Turnpike state trooper shooting. Convicted of various crimes including bank robbery, kidnapping, and murder, she has been described as a criminal.
Shakur attended Borough of Manhattan Community College and City College of New York before becoming an active member of the Black Panther Party and the violent Black Liberation Army. She was subject to a national FBI manhunt at one point and later escaped from a New Jersey prison before being granted asylum in Cuba.
In the late 1980s, Assata Shakur published her book titled “Assata: An Autobiography.” She married Mr. Chesimard and had a daughter named Kakuya while spending her childhood between New York City and Wilmington, North Carolina.
