About Arlen Siu
Arlen Siu was a Nicaraguan-Chinese woman born on July 15, 1955, who tragically lost her life during the Sandinista revolution in 1975 at the age of twenty. Despite her young age, she made significant contributions through her art and writings on topics such as feminism. Siu is revered as a martyr by the Nicaraguan women’s movement.
Prior to her involvement in the revolution, Siu attended the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua before joining the Sandinistas at just eighteen years old. Her legacy lives on through various works, including “Maria Rural,” a song she wrote that has been covered by artists like Grupo Pancasan and Marlene Alvarez.
Her father, Armando, also played a role in shaping Siu’s path as he served in the Communist Revolutionary Army.
