About Antonia Coello Novello
Antonia Coello Novello, born on August 23, 1944 in Fajardo, Puerto Rico, is a doctor who became the 14th Surgeon General of the United States during the early 1990s. She began her career as a pediatric physician at Georgetown University Hospital in 1976 and later earned an MPH degree from Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health in 1982. In addition to her role as Surgeon General, she also served as the New York state Commissioner of Health in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Novello was married to U.S. Navy psychiatrist Joseph R. Novello and faced legal charges related to fraud and government services theft for actions taken during her tenure.
