Annie Jump Cannon was an American astronomer born on December 11, 1863, in Dover, Delaware. She is best known for her significant impact on contemporary stellar classification through her creation of the Harvard Classification Scheme with Edward C. Pickering.
Cannon made history as the first woman elected as an officer of the American Astronomical Society. Before achieving fame, she battled scarlet fever while studying at Wellesley College and consequently became mostly deaf.
Throughout her career, Cannon classified a staggering 230,000 stellar bodies which led to her earning the nickname “Census Taker of the Sky.” Her father, Wilson Lee Cannon, played a role in shaping her life as he was both a shipbuilder and state senator.
