Annie Jones Elliot (1865-07-14) was an American performer known as the “Bearded Lady” who gained fame touring with showman PT Barnum as a circus attraction in the late 1800s. Born in Virginia, she had hirsutism or hypertrichosis, which caused her to have facial hair resembling that of a full-grown man.
Initially horrified by their daughter’s condition, her parents eventually saw it as an opportunity for profit and took her to New York City at nine months old. There, P.T. Barnum featured her in his “Greatest Show on Earth,” billing her as the “baby Esau.”
As she grew into adulthood, Annie became one of the country’s most famous “bearded ladies” and worked to eliminate the use of the term “freaks” from show business.
She married Richard Elliot in 1881 but divorced him in 1895 for her childhood sweetheart William Donovan, who later passed away, leaving Jones a widow.
Annie Jones Elliot died at age 37 from tuberculosis and left behind a legacy as one of the most prominent figures in circus history.
