About Annie Easley
Annie Easley, born on April 23, 1933, in Alabama, was a pioneering computer scientist. She contributed significantly to the development of the computer code for NASA’s Centaur rocket stage and was among the first African-American computer and rocket scientists.
Before her career in computing and space technology, Easley studied at Xavier University in New Orleans and initially pursued pharmacy as a profession. She later earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Cleveland State University.
Notably, during the Jim Crow era, Easley worked to ensure that fellow African-Americans were not disenfranchised by helping them prepare for the literacy test portion of voter applications.
Easley was born to Willie Sims and Bud McCrory and grew up in pre-Civil Rights Movement Birmingham, Alabama. Later she settled in Cleveland, Ohio.
