About Anne Of Cleves
Anne of Cleves was born on September 22, 1515 in Dusseldorf, Germany. She became the Queen of England after marrying King Henry VIII in 1540, but their marriage was annulled just six months later.
Before her time as a queen, Anne was originally planned to marry Francis, the son of the Duke of Lorraine at the age of eleven. However, this arrangement fell through a few years later.
Notably, King Henry VIII commissioned artist Hans Holbein the Younger to paint her portrait along with that of her sister Amalia so he could choose which noblewoman based on appearance would become his wife.
Anne grew up in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany as the daughter of Duke John III and Duchess Maria.
