About Anna Elizabeth Dickinson

Anna Elizabeth Dickinson was a prominent Civil Rights Leader known for her impassioned pro-women’s suffrage and anti-slavery speeches. Born on October 28, 1842, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she became involved in activism at an early age.

At only fourteen years old, Dickinson wrote an abolitionist-themed essay for William Lloyd Garrison’s newspaper The Liberator. She went on to support the successful 1863 campaigns of Republican candidates in Union-affiliated states.

In addition to her political work, Dickinson also made notable contributions to literature and theater. In 1868, she published a novel addressing interracial marriage and later took on the male title role in the 1882 Broadway production of Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

She came from a Quaker family with strong abolitionist beliefs; however, her father died when she was just a baby. Despite this early loss and the challenges she faced as a woman in that era, Anna Elizabeth Dickinson left an enduring legacy as a courageous activist and advocate for equality.
