Anna Brownell Jameson (1794-05-17) was a nineteenth-century English writer known for her essays and novels. Born in Ireland, she made a name for herself as a novelist, with her debut work, The Diary of an Ennuyee, published in 1826.
In the 1840s, she transitioned to writing about the history of art and produced several notable works including Companion to the Private Galleries and Memoirs of the Early Italian Painters. Her 1832 work, Characteristics of Women, provided analyses of William Shakespeare’s female characters.
Jameson hailed from a family with artistic inclinations; her father Denis Brownell Murphy was a painter.
