About Anna Atkins

Anna Atkins (March 16, 1799) was a pioneering photographer known for her work in botanical illustration. She is remembered for her publication “Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions” and her collaborations with Anne Dixon on several photographic books about ferns. Atkins received an advanced scientific education during her childhood and honed her artistic skills by creating shell engravings. She may have been the first female photographer in history, although some sources credit this milestone to her friend Constance Talbot. Born in England, she was the daughter of prominent natural scientist John George Children and spent much of her youth in Kent. In the mid-1820s, she married John Pelly Atkins.
