Ann Sophia Stephens was a 19th-century American novelist and magazine editor who is credited with creating the dime novel genre. She was born on March 30, 1810, in Derby, Connecticut.
Stephens is best known for her works such as Maleaska, the Indian Wife of the White Hunter (1860) and High Life in New York (1843). Before gaining success as a writer, she co-founded Portland Magazine, a monthly literary publication.
She adopted the pen name of Jonathan Slick and was married to Edward Stephens in 1831. Her parents were Ann and John Winterbotham.
