About Ann Peebles
Ann Peebles was born on April 27, 1947, in St. Louis, Missouri. She is a blues singer and songwriter who gained fame in the 1970s as a Memphis soul singer for Hi Records. Two of her most popular hits include “I Can’t Stand the Rain” and “I’m Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down.” In 2014, she was inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame.
Peebles began her singing career with The Peebles Choir, her family’s musical group from St. Louis. The choir opened shows for gospel stars such as Mahalia Jackson and the Soul Stirrers featuring Sam Cooke.
In 1974, Ann Peebles married Don Bryant. Despite taking a brief hiatus in the 1980s to dedicate more time to her family, she resumed her music career in 1989 and continued recording and performing until a stroke in 2012 forced her to retire from music.
