Anita Desai is an Indian novelist born on June 24th, 1937. She has gained recognition as a British fiction writer and has been shortlisted for the Booker Prize three times. Her most notable work, The Village By the Sea, won the British Guardian Prize.
Desai also pursued a career in academia, serving as a professor of humanities at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Prior to her literary success, Desai earned a degree in English literature from the University of Delhi in 1957. Her acclaimed works include Clear Light of Day, In Custody and Fasting, Feasting.
She was married to businessman Ashvin Desai and had four children with him.
